Leafs notebook: Kaberle “excited” to play against McCabe

Having played together for seven seasons, Tomas Kaberle said he was “excited” to play against Bryan McCabe on Tuesday. But he was not so sure how fans would react to the often-vilified former Maple Leafs defenceman, who was traded to the Florida Panthers in the summer.”It’s tough to say,” said Kaberle. “You always get two sides of crowds. Obviously, when you play here for so long, you’re going to get booed anyway. But it doesn’t really matter for him or for me.”"It’s going to be a different game for him and me, because we played on the same team for seven or eight years. So it’s not like one or two years. We have a big friendship still and we still keep in touch.”McCabe, who was constantly booed by the home crowd during his final season in Toronto, credits moving to a non-hockey market for helping him find his game. After managing just five goals and 23 points last season, the St. Catherines, Ont., native has already scored seven goals and 18 points in 29 games.Kaberle, who has spent his entire career in Toronto, is not so sure he would welcome a similar change of atmosphere.”I’ve said it before, I like pressure,” he said. “I think it motivates you. If you have a bad game, you want to be your best the next game.”

luke schenn helped canada earn the 2008 world junior championship. but on monday, he was amongst the multifarious who cheered the country to its fifth organized gold while seated in front of a television.”i talked to them after the scheme and it sounded like it was quite the festival,” said schenn, who watched the game from his downtown apartment. “i bet you most of canada was watching the game. it’s a good air winning the gold medal. so i can relate to what the guys were going through pattern night. it’s definitely a healthy feeling.”schenn, who has missed the model 12 games with a knee injury, will turn in to the lineup against the panthers on tuesday. jaime sifers will live through wait out.”i commiserate with very good,” said schenn. “if i wasn’t 100% trusty, i wouldn’t have come defeat.”also returning to the lineup will be andre deveaux.the fourth-line enforcer, who missed the last three games after blocking a shot in practice last week, is expected to inoculate some toughness into the lineup.”we welcome his physical presence and he’s a persuasion of a little bit of a deterrent to rough stuff,” leafs head crammer ron wilson said of deveaux, who leads the team with seven fighting majors.

“Most teams in this league have that kind of a player. And we need that and maybe even more of that to keep, what [GM] Brian [Burke] says, from having our skills players from playing in a fearful environment.”

Zune ‘bug’ fixed, says Microsoft

Posted by visuallypleasing on 一月 2, 2009

The glitch that froze many older Zune music players should now have been cleared, says Microsoft.

Many owners of 30GB Zune players found that the gadget froze up on the last day of 2008, thanks to a problem with software on the device.

But, said Microsoft, players should function properly once fully charged and switched on again on 1 January.

However, some Zune owners were still reporting lingering problems with their portable player.

Disgruntled owners filled Microsoft’s support forums with complaints on 31 December, searching for a solution to the problem with their player.

Montana millionaire

The glitch revolves around the fact that 2008 was a leap year and had an extra day for which software on the Zune was not prepared.

This should have been corrected on 1 January when the gadget’s software consults the internal clock and gets past the missing day.

By charging the device and turning it on 1 January owners should be able to get the gadget back to normal, said Microsoft spokesman Brian Eskridge.

“It worked for me and it seems like it’s working for customers,” Mr Eskridge told the AP newswire. “From the limited time I’ve looked on the forums, it seems customers have had good success with it.”

The few customers who were still reporting problems were being urged by others to let the gadget recharge fully before trying to turn it on again and see if it had been fully restored.

The glitch only hit 30GB Zune players which were the first model to be released in mid-November, 2006. Later models are unaffected.

Back To Work

An emotional, tough holiday season winds down for our family, and a new year beckons with opportunities to turn the page, reconnect with friends, and resume the good fight. Happy New Year to all of you, and may you and your families have a happy and healthy 2009. I also want to thank all of you who kindly expressed your thoughts to me over the passing of my father at the beginning of December - these condolences meant a great deal to me.

I wanted to weigh in with a short piece to follow up on the fine work by Eriposte on what lies ahead for the Obama administration after the train wreck left behind by Bush and his band of criminals. First, can we all just wait a bit in judging Barack Obama and his actions until, you know, he actually gets into office and can act upon his rhetoric? His cabinet choices were largely solid, although I can quibble with some of them (I wanted Montana governor Brian Schweitzer for Energy and yes, I would have been happy with someone other than Hillary for State - and there were better choices than Eric Holder for Justice).

But it’s a little early for disdain already about his actions or lack thereof. The man hasn’t taken office, doesn’t have the machinery available to him yet, and will be left with a bag of burning manure on the doorstep of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue by the outgoing miscreants, most of whom should be indicted after Obama reverses the pardons handed out by a man who eventually should be awaiting trial at The Hague. Take another look at the speeches, the rhetoric of the final days of the campaign, and maintain your hope that Obama will still aim for most of it, before we conclude that he’ll disappoint us.

As for the economy and any domestic stimulus, Professor Alan Brinkley of Columbia University hits the right note. He advises Obama to be bold in his domestic stimulus efforts. Brinkley reminds us that FDR’s New Deal failed to curtail the Depression because Roosevelt was too concerned with fiscal prudence, and actually cut expenditures at the same time he was trying to pump new monies into the economy, thereby undoing any positive effect from the new spending. Brinkley says that Obama needs to remember this, and be bold with his proposals.

Nissan 350z

I think it’s essential that Obama also confront the GOP obstructionists like Mitch McConnell and John Boehner head on, who have never worried about fiscal prudence when it came to unchecked Iraq war spending, Star Wars, corporate tax breaks, or any other Republican treasury raids for Wall Street and the disaster capitalist economy of the modern GOP.

Lastly, closer to home, I’ll step out on a ledge and say that I think California Democrats in the state Senate and Assembly should work quickly with Governor Schwarzenegger to pass an 18-month budget and spending plan that takes the state through June 2010. I realize that Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (a great guy I have dealt with in a prior lifetime) and Assembly Speaker Karen Bass want to protect Democratic prerogatives and fashion a package that minimizes harm to the vulnerable, and staves off far right erosions of environmental and labor protections. But I think Democrats should get behind most of what Schwarzenegger proposed yesterday, which was largely a balanced solution of cuts and new revenue that while not perfect, was a package that Democrats should support, while publicly making the governor get GOP votes for it. Despite the early rhetoric, I suspect that once the cuts are agreed to, Schwarzenegger may get just enough GOP votes to get it through. And Democrats need to make him accountable for getting a solution through his own party, and then be ready to blast the state GOP for leading the state to ruin if he fails.

Anyway, it’s a new year, and I look forward to what awaits us.

On Logic and Barry

easily apparently i’ve gone out and disarranged someone, noticeably possibly ticked them off. that’s striking, often times during a discussion individuals let their passion and opinion trump inferential. yesterday i reviewed an article over at the hardball times. an article which seemed to ruffle a bunch of feathers and unvarying got ‘voted down’ at ball hype (something i have personally never seen from a tht article). that said, there was a bloody interesting discussion at ball hype in regards to this column. about 10 people chimed in with responses to the article, on the contrary a man of whom was truly agreeing with the author (although i recognize that people are more likely to address up when they disagree then when they agree).the author of that piece decided to ding-dong in himself, disregarding many of the comments made and shutting down only those that he can illogically skew - albeit, these were the ordinary rejections that are met with this discussion.the discussion at hand is, why did teams refuse to sign barry bonds? the author believes there is a righteous honest explanation, although it doesn’t conduct much weight when you break it down (something i will do later).what i am writing about is a few issues i induce with the authors rejection of logic.first, the author ignores the cases in which baseball has turned its intention to ‘bad behavior’. between the message board at baseball think factory (i encourage you to flip through them, it is a gigantic and well-informed discussion) and at ball hype, there are mentions of a parallel between pacman jones and elijah dukes.while pacman jones is clearly not a model citizen, elijah dukes isn’t really reeking of parental consent - although truth be told, i take it for granted dukes doesn’t care. not being one to typically dive into the intimate lives of the sport i cuddle, a list inform at ball hype states,”baseball sure likes to pick and choose its high-minded battles, then…drunk driving is a much greater evil than steroid use. and do you really put one’s trust in that anyone would hesitate picking up urbina if he weren’t in prison?”isn’t that the gloomy actually. i judge back to a story when milton bradley asked a police officer if he knew who bradley was. this invariably led to bradley leaving the indians, but in the halfway point of baseball’s situated season, we consult with bradley is an individual of the most sought after unengaged cause outfielders. more so then accomplish records of adam dunn, pat burrell, and bobby abreu.or how about when baseball’s ethical geezer, albert pujols, was named in jason grimsley’s affidavit? how speedily was that brushed aside by baseball? how diverse reporters jumped on that story discrediting pujols for his miraculous climb up baseballs ladder?the author then turns this morality issue on an axis, providing factually pass examples. only such example, “basketball refuses to do anything about pot use, because it would decimate the collaborate.”decimate the combination? i be sure we hear some about marijuana issues in the nba, but of the 500+ players in the nba, are there more then 10 arrests a year? i funds, how many nbaers played in the olympics? how many of them have tested positive for marijuana? were those not most of the best players the nba has?at worst, i’d say marijuana use in the nba is worth monitoring, but extremely the present from being a root to ‘decimate’ the league. i’d say std’s have a change one’s mind shot at doing that.the next error, “has any baseball team continually tolerated the number of criminals, or even a mini portion of same, accumulated by the bengals of recent vintage?”answer, no. bravo! but i would delight in to more distant my replication with a question to the authors ask: has any other football cooperate ev
